Marketing Inspirations from the Infamous Sitcom—Superstore

“I’m going to unleash crazy Amy. You guys can call me “Craymie” — Amy Dubanowski

Superstore is based on the life of employees working in a retail store - Cloud9! The series throws light on how these characters survive on minimal wages, how they keep themselves entertained, and what kind of hurdles they face when they work in such a huge company.

The series started to air in 2015 and it is one of the reasons that it will be relatable to you given the workplace problems that we all face.

There has been a lot of conjecture about the fact that the series is based on the huge retail store in America - The Target. But, there’s been no news or anything to confirm the same.

Marketing Inspirations from Superstore

And just like every other series, there’s something to learn from Superstore too. There are certain marketing inspirations that you and I can take from Superstore.

1 ) Test Time!

Cloud9 keeps a mock test for their employees. The mock test was to see how much of their employees know about the brand. And based on their capabilities and knowledge, a score was given to them.

The new intern Jonah and Amy took the test, while Amy had been working in the store for a long, long time.

While Jonah scored 100/100 on the mock test, Amy scored really low on the test, which made Amy envious of Jonah, quite understandably so and resonates Jonah’s high score with her newbie luck.

Towards the end of the episode, it is revealed that Jonah really knows her way around the store and it was not just mere luck.

What we can learn from this incident is that no matter if it’s an intern or a new employee, don’t dismiss anyone or underestimate them, they may have really some cool ideas that might change the course of your company.

2) Competition Time It is!

Cloud9 divided their employees in two teams - Red and Yellow!

Somehow, the Yellow team finds out that the agenda of this little game was that the team that will make more sales will earn $100 per employee.

Given the reward, the Yellow team got really enthusiastic and at the same time, they made sure the Red team didn't find out about the agenda of this activity.

Your takeaway from this can be that a brand’s strategy to make more sales does not necessarily mean spending a huge amount of money for marketing campaigns.

You can come up with creative ways to create more sales in-house or give more target-based sales to their employees and even offer them reinforcements if and when they meet the same. This, in turn, will motivate the employees to meet the targets.

3) Did you say Jingles?

Bo and Cheyenne were trying to write a jingle for Cloud9.

Bo, a wannabe rapper, was all set to write the jingle for Cloud9. When Cheyenne told him that he should write something along the lines of target customers’ expectations and their persona, Bo dismissed her.

While Bo kept on writing the jingles that were political and crappy and obviously, it doesn’t work out.

Cloud9 ends up going with the jingles from the third party and those jingles were all about their customers’ persona.

Next time that you are thinking of writing jingles, make sure that you take Cheyenne’s advice and make something up according to what your customers want to see and how your customers see you.

4) Do you want to Revamp?

When Cloud9 decided to revamp their brand, Cheyenne suggested that their mascot should be a cloudman instead of a cloud. She suggested that the cloudman should have hands and feet and must be named Supercloud.

She also said that they could make minor tweaks as per the departments. Like in the grocery department, the mascot could carry the groceries and in the sports department, the mascot could carry the sports equipment.

And here’s what you can learn from Cheyenne. Your mascot should not be your logo - it can be inspired from your logo, but it should not be your logo. You can make some tweaks as per your departments. And having a mascot is one of the great ways to have a mascot.

5) Did someone say Reels?

So, Amy & Jonah decide to have a competition to get 100likes on Amy's reel

Amy trying to slash down Kelly, By mistake she shot a video in the kitchen and then a mouse was seen in the kitchen, which obviously backfired and it harmed the brand’s publicity.

Now, the brands are creating reels for their businesses as it is the up and coming way to reach their customers. When you are creating reels, make sure that you double-check the background and the content does not harm your brand in any way whatsoever.
