Marketing lessons from top Luxury brand's collaboration in 2022

When the two worlds collide, something surreal and exciting comes out of it. The first time when collaboration happened was in 1935 - Elsa Schiaparelli met Salvador Dali. Ever since then, collaborations became a part and parcel of life, and it still continues to thrive with new perspectives, definitions, and forms.

2021 was the year of non-stop collaborations. In the previous year, collaborations were larger than ever before, which includes a collaboration of two luxury behemoths - Balenciaga and Gucci - also known as ‘The Hacker Project’.

The work of inter-brand projects was relentless, never-ending, and of course, highly-engaging.

And in 2022, the world of collaborations has just snowballed. Barely a few months have passed and you can already see a number of intriguing collaborations that have been released.

Creative Collaborations That is on the Path to Change the World!

Gucci x adidas

While Prada x Gucci was all about class, Gucci’s collaboration with a sportswear brand was all about reinventing and recontextualising adidas’ motifs. The tailored suits were made out of everything from corduroy to silk jacquards and had a Trefoil logo on them.

The capes, dresses, and even swimming capes had adidas stripes. It displayed the unique style and design of Alessandro Michele and their mastery of appropriating symbols and imbuing them with renewed meanings.

Supreme/Burberry

In 2017, Supreme had collaborated with Louis Vuitton and back then it was all that anyone could talk about. And in 2018, Burberry collaborated with Gosha Rubchinskiy, which was a tribute to the popularity of the nova check amongst Russian youth.

For this collaboration, Supreme brought the heritage in Burberry by reclaiming its troubled past around the nova check. There was a renewed perspective on the signature print that was noteworthy as it maintained a recognisable cool in the realm of streetwear.

Balmain x Barbie

One of the most iconic collaborations proved that you can be a Barbie man in a Barbie world. Balmain x Barbie created unisex outfits for every man who loves to doll up. The logo was reimagined with the cues from the Barbie logo of the 90’s era.

This collaboration was the manifestation of dreams. The shoot featured iconic characters like Kaonashi and Haku, the creative director evoked the whimsical elements of the movie through graphic elements that were emblazoned across clothes, bags, and little leather goods.

Yeezy Gap By Balenciaga

This was a collaboration between fash and high fashion, and thus, was an interesting observation. The militaristic design ethos blended perfectly with the form-focused approach, thus, creating everyday utilitarian designs that were surreal and unique.

An artistic collaboration merged distinct worlds like affordable, mass market GAP, and Demma’s world of Balenciaga in a cohesive manner. The collection was sold out immediately because of the sheer star power of the trio and the collection’s accessible price points.

Moncler + DingYun Zhang

Zhang has always been flirtatious with the idea of protection and constantly fusses that concept with organic forms to create out-of-the-world designs.

Working within the color palette of the corals, every piece in this collection was a statement in its own and gave a sneak peek into Zhang’s fantasia.

Fendance (Fendi x Versace)

Fendi and Versace come together to create a collection that celebrates the legacy and symbols of both fashion houses. Signature silhouettes, expert craftsmanship, FF patterns and the iconic Medusa motifs are seamlessly combined in a showstopping selection of ready to wear and accessories.

Graphics meld Fendi's FF logo with Versace's Barocco and Ventagli foulard prints, while symbols and signatures of both houses punctuate bags, dresses and accessories. Exquisite craftsmanship transforms leather into shimmering chain mail, and Medusa Safety Pins into highly decorative yet functional elements.
